Speed Skating Technique

Speed Skating involves balance, weight distribution, body positioning, breathing, skate control and mental attitude and so technique is one of the most important things for an indoor and track skater. For a skater to make a fast and efficient turn, they lean into the corner while keeping their shoulders and hips level with the floor. They cross all the way over and always push to the side with their heel to get as much power as they can. The center of gravity of the skater is always level with the floor, so a lot of their weight is pushing down, even though they are leaning. One thing you will see many indoor skaters do is put their hand on the floor and skate while touching the ground, particularly for ice skaters. This doesn't really provide any advantage, but it looks quite good! Technique is one of the most important parts of indoor skating, and is often the difference between the pros and the beginners.

The video below shows the basics of body positioning for beginners which will be used time and again to improve your technique. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there for more advanced techniques such as crossovers, double pushing, racing lines etc. so take some time and have a look! Also, check out the Preventing Injuries page for some off-skate exercises that will help with technique.
